VIDEO (niederländisch): NOS, The nationwide 8pm news featured the opening concert
Description
A special
opening of the six-day Pärt Music Festival at the Muziekgebouw
aan het IJ. No fewer than 144 ship's horns played two works
by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt on the terrace, and four works
by kang artist and instrument maker Christof Schläger with his
wife Marjon Smit, who conceived ship's horn concert.
Sound artist Christof Schläger: "Horns are instruments of every metropolis".
The ship's horns could still be heard within a radius of one kilometer around the Muziekgebouw.
"The horns are the instruments of the city. There are trains, cranes, construction sites and airplanes.
It all makes noise and we are mostly more victims of that city noise. I thought: there are idiosyncratic
aesthetics in that. It would be exciting to transform this noise source and turn it into instruments."
"I find it very impressive,
it's beautiful sounds that come from deep inside"
"It's magical,
it's really magical!"
"Very beautiful and a
very spatial sound, of course it makes me think of Amsterdam as a port city as well"
"The concert exceeded
my expectations, unexpectedly beautiful with much more variations than I had thought."

A horn group consists of 64 horns, small,
modified ship’s horns. 32 horns have copper bells whose sound color is reminiscent of trumpets.
Each wind machine is powered by a portable air compressor of the type used in road construction
with a minimum pressure of 7 bar or 100 psi (pounds per square inch) and an air flow capacity
of 1.000 to 2000 CFM (cubic feet per minute), These units have an operating dBA as low as 64 db
which significantly reduces the incidence of unwanted noise. The ship’s horns are tuned diatonically
and are controlled by a computer.
